HLEGAMANZI LODGE, WELGEVONDEN PRIVATE GAME RESERVE, WATERBERG

Hlegamanzi — “laughing waters” — perches about 50 metres above the Grootfontein River in the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve, the sound of the river below setting the tone from the moment of arrival.

 

The Genius Loci of this extraordinary site informed every decision. Ancient leadwood trees, used rarely and with great reverence, serve as structural columns — their weathered forms bringing the age and character of the surrounding bushveld directly into the architecture. Local materials throughout, completely off-grid, the lodge sits on its clifftop as though it grew there.

 

An exclusive and intimate retreat, where the panoramic views over the expansive bushveld below are as much a part of the design as the structure itself.
